500 GB Blue Xbox 360 Confirmed; Includes Two Call of Duty Games for $250

The rumors were right. Today, Microsoft officially announced a new blue Xbox 360 system bundle featuring the biggest hard drive ever for the console and two free games.

Just as a leaked Wal-Mart ad scan indicated, the $250 special edition bundle includes a 500 GB blue system, matching blue controller, one month of Xbox Live Gold, and copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Ghosts.

The system will be exclusive to Walmart, and has been announced only for the United States. It launches on October 7.

This was one of three new Xbox 360 bundles announced today. Another is the 500 GB Holiday Value Bundle (at left), which will be available at retailers nationwide next week. It includes everything mentioned above, only the console and controller are the standard black color.

Third, a new 4 GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle coming exclusively to Target will include the system and the camera, as well as three games: Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, and Forza Horizon. This bundle will sell for $250, though a launch date was not announced.

The Xbox 360 was first released in November 2005, meaning this holiday season marks the console's ninth year on the market. The system has sold over 84 million units worldwide to date.

Minecraft to Join Microsoft

Today is an incredibly exciting day for our team as Mojang and the Minecraft franchise join Microsoft. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, from players since its launch in 2009. Minecraft inspires millions to create together, connects people across the globe, and is a community that is among the most active and passionate in the world.

Our relationship with Mojang began when we initially talked to the team about bringing Minecraft to the console. Minecraft quickly became the top online game on Xbox Live, with over two billion hours played on Xbox 360 in the last two years. That working relationship set the ground work for other opportunities. We’ve long seen the incredible potential of Minecraft.

At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.

The Minecraft community is passionate and diverse, ranging across all ages and demographics. We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we’ll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.

We’re excited to confirm that MINECON will continue next year. We’ll look to create even more ways for the vibrant community of YouTuber’s, innovators, bloggers and players to connect with each other – both in person and online. We will have much more to share in the coming months.

The Minecraft team’s unique vision, creative energy and innovative mindset make them a perfect fit alongside our other global studios. Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few. These industry-leading game studios within Microsoft that have had great success with beloved games and massively popular franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. We’re excited to welcome Mojang to the Microsoft family and we are thrilled to support the success and longevity of Minecraft for years to come.

What is Cloud Gaming ?

Cloud gaming, sometimes called gaming on demand, is a type of online gaming.

So to make it understandable for everyone, cloud gaming is a way to play games without purchasing it from the stores, we can download the game from XBL but it's not like that. You can play the game without downloading the whole game. it's just like Live Video Streaming, you stream the game into your console you play then.

Basically, it hasn't started yet, because to stream a game of 30 gig's and if you have a slower internet. That's not going to work. If you pay 40 AED for a 24 hour game and the game takes a day to download, it's a total waste. So this is still work in progress, but Sony has started this for their PS4 consoles to play streaming PS3 Games.

This will come for XBOX One,XBOX 360 as well and also handheld devices such as PS VITA also

1080p on Xbox One will get easier over time, assures Microsoft hardware boss

Improvements resulting from software optimisation are par for the course with any piece of gaming hardware, naturally. As you may recall from our report on backwards compatibility, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One employ completely different processing architecture, which means that developers must discard or build on their old techniques.
"The hardware is basically baked, and what comes next is people discovering better software techniques to take advantage of it, especially in the ordering of the data so it flows through all the caches correctly, and I think there's a lot of opportunity there," said Multerer. Of the Xbox One's ESRAM - a slab of super-fast RAM that works in tandem with the console's eight GB of DDR3 RAM - he added that "this is where tuning your data set becomes super important."

The creators of the Xbox One launch titles didn't have much opportunity to fine-tune their work with a view to improving visual fidelity, according to Multerer. "Once these engines - the engine developers like Frostbyte and those guys - they really wrap their heads around this particular GPU architecture, then all of the titles coming out of that studio will take advantage of it and get better."

Multerer says we can look forward to "fairly large improvements in GPU output as people really tune these data sets now to get maximum use out of their GPUs". Resolution isn't the be-all and end-all, however. "Part of it is learning how to tune, part of it is I think a very legitimate question of quality of pixels versus number of pixels, and of course both are interesting."

Microsoft is using your data to target political ads on Xbox LIVE

Microsoft is trying to persuade politicians to take out targeted ads on Xbox Live, Skype, MSN and other company platforms as midterm elections begin heating up around the country. To plug the idea, Microsoft officials handed out promotional materials Thursday at CPAC, the annual conference for conservatives.

It's the latest move by tech companies to seize a piece of the lucrative political ad market. The ads, which would appear on the Xbox Live dashboard and other Microsoft products, combine Microsoft user IDs and other public data to build a profile of Xbox users. Campaigns can then blast ads to selected demographic categories, or to specific congressional districts. And if the campaign brings its own list of voter e-mail addresses, Microsoft can match the additional data with individual customer accounts for even more accurate voter targeting.

The image of white male teens as the stereotypical average gamer is something of a myth; Microsoft says that of its 25 million Xbox Live subscribers in the United States, 38 percent are women. Forty percent are married, and more than half have children. Those numbers are important, because they represent key demographics that are among the most contested in political races. Microsoft is particularly aggressive in selling its ability to reach women, Latinos and millennials; across the company's other platforms, such as MSN, Microsoft has developed consumer categories like "Ciudad Strivers" and "Nuevo Horizons" that attempt to describe a set of characteristics including age, type of residence and income level. At a time when virtually all politicians are resorting to microtargeting, this technology could help Microsoft become a major player in the advertising space.

Twitch on XBOX ONE at 1280x720 and PS4 on 960x540

The Xbox One Twitch streaming app is set to debut ahead of the Titanfall launch next week and Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb showed off a demo Monday night with a few rounds of Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.

The Twitch app will be launched as part of the Xbox One spring update ahead of the Titanfall launch on Tuesday, March 11. Exact details of when the update will be rolled out has not been announced yet. However, Hyrb was able to confirm a number of details for the app and a stream analyzer reveals that the game runs at 1280x720, 30fps and approximately 2.5 mbps. For comparison, the PS4 Twitch app streams at 960x540, 30 fps and approximately 1.7mbps.

When you first open the Twitch app on Xbox One, it will test your connection to determine your best settings for streaming. You can change those settings if you like though according to Hyrb. You can start streaming at anytime by launching the Twitch app with your controller or using the "Xbox Broadcast" voice command.

The Twitch app will be loaded up in "Snapped" mode at default but can be unsnapped as well. You won't be able to use the GameDVR at the same time though.

SmartGlass will not be supported at launch though you can just as easily pull up the Twitch chat for your stream with a tablet, laptop or other supported device.

Some of the other details include:

Automatic archiving of Twitch streams is supported.
The standard Xbox headset chat can be used but viewers will not be able to hear anybody else from your party.
Chat and viewer stats will be displayed on screen without being displayed in the stream.
Picture-in-picture screens can be used to show video from Kinect and can be placed in any of the four corners of the screen.
Twitch can ban consoles if caught streaming something inappropriate.
Nelson plans to host more Twitch streaming demos through the week including a stream on Friday with a "special guest." No details on who that might be yet.

This Month's Xbox One Console Update Changes At Least 15 Things

The March firmware update for the Xbox One will do a lot more than improve party chat in advance of the launch of the system's big multiplayer March 11 game Titanfall. It'll also tweak a bunch of other things on the console.
Microsoft officials were kind enough to provide us with a list. We've numbered it for you and added some explanations and thoughts.
Note that some on the Kotaku team were able to start downloading this update early, but we've not had much time to test it. The download was about 400MB. It should be available for system owners this week or, at latest, very early next week.

1."Get to your friends list faster." Microsoft says you can now access your friends list from the homepage of the Friends app and can use a Social tile on the system's Home screen—or say "Xbox, go to friends" to see who is online.
2."Party chat on by default." Removing one of the stranger decisions Microsoft had made at launch, you will no longer have to manually turn on party chat after you join a party.
3."Chat with friends playing different games." Self-explanatory.
4."'Invite friends to game' option available in your multiplayer titles." File this under: they didn't have this already?
5."See a list of 'Recent Players.'" Very nice. You can easily re-connect with, friend or even report people you just played with through this list.
6."Twitch TV live streaming support." As previously-announced. Good stuff. Timed to the March 11 launch of a new Twitch app.
7."Dolby Digital sound." So technical, so let's just quote them on this one and hope it makes Kotaku audiophile Kirk Hamilton happy: "Optical out now supports 5.1 Dolby Digital, enabling devices such as sound bars and headsets with only optical in to be able to receive 5.1 Dolby Digital from Xbox One over optical. We're also adding support for Dolby Digital surround sound over HDMI. Now you'll be able to have the best sound quality no matter what speaker setup you are using. "
8."We will now support 50Hz output to Xbox One." This should mainly be of benefit to Europeans, they say.
9."Volume up/down adjustments." This is the first of some of the less noticeable changes Microsoft is now describing. This one lets you adjust how much your volume goes up or down each time you say "Xbox, volume up" or "Xbox, volume down."
10."New ways to stay connected with SmartGlass." The second-screen SmartGlass app made for phones and tablets will receive Xbox Live messages (no indication that you can send them) and will let you watch friends' gameplay clips. They're also saying you can tap SmartGlass to unsnap an app on your TV.
11."Support for new Xbox One accessories." They say: "Xbox One now supports the recently announced Xbox One stereo headset and adapter, Xbox One media remote with a dedicated OneGuide button, as well as third party headsets."
12."Browser improvements." They say: "When you're searching for content, there's now a direct link to IE to see related results on the web. New gesture and controller features let you directly zoom and pan Bing and Google maps. And search is even faster in IE – just highlight a phrase on a web page, and press the menu button to search Bing and learn more. "
13."IR blasting of power and volume to TVs/AVRs is now available in all regions."
14."Easy sound bar setup." They're removing the need to type in model numbers for "most sound bars or AVRs" while hooking them up to the console.
15."General improvements. Last, but not least, a few miscellaneous update the ability to view Game Clips while in Snap mode and a new passkey feature to protect user settings

Microsoft will fix Xbox One party chat before Titanfall launch

Two Xbox One updates will introduce a new party chat system. Also: USB keyboards! Battery power indicator! Storage management!

Microsoft has said it will release two firmware updates for the Xbox One in advance of Titanfall, promising to improve the system's features--including, crucially, party chat--in time for the launch of the anticipated multiplayer shooter.

The two updates are scheduled to arrive on February 11 and March 4.

With the February 11 update, users will finally be able to manage their hard drive space, alongside managing download queues and install order.

The February 11 update will also bring back an onscreen battery power indicator for controllers, and support for USB keyboards.

The March 4 update, meanwhile, will feature a new party and multiplayer system for the Xbox One, with Microsoft specifically saying that the update will optimize the Xbox One for the launch of Titanfall on March 11.
